Gas Furnaces and Air Handlers use a fan relay to switch the blower motor ON and OFF. The fan circulates the warm or cold air inside the home.
Most furnaces and air handlers using a two-speed motor, a high speed for cooling and a lower speed for heating. This setup requires a 6-spade relay.
Many newer appliances, particularly gas furnaces operate with a one-speed fan motor in heating and cooling mode; this requires a five spade relay.
Several GOODMAN A/C units have a Fan Relay with an integrated time delay installed. It delays the start of the fan blower for about 10 seconds on a call for cooling or heating. The air has time air warm up respectively cool down before circulating in the house.
Once the thermostat is satisfied, the time delay keeps the fan motor running for about 90 seconds, using the still available energy (hot or cold coils) to save energy.
